Fear and Loathing is a series of Gonzo journalism novels by American author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson . Although counted as fiction, the series is autobiographical of Thompson. Directors Martin Scorsese and Oliver Stone made attempts at adapting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to film. Eventually, Terry Gilliam would adapt it in 1998, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro. Although a cult hit, the film received mixed reviews and failed at the box office.
